Week 2

Me and my group found ideas when we tried comparing our game to others like it. 4 Square itself is a pretty simple game. You hit that ball into the opponent's square and try to make them miss it. So, we began brainstorming all the games we had played as kids back in elementary school and found some ideas to try and spice the game up.

Researching is not too terrible, as we just thought about pulling ideas from games we had already played in the past. When my groupmates and I discussed ideas, we had thought about several ones that we thought were going to be a good way to make the game challenging. Many of them seemed like really good ideas at first but as we delved deeper into how the rules would actually fit into the game, we hit some snags that would make it a lot more difficult. Going with the Term of Modding we decided to have people on the outside who could earn their way in was one of the better and simpler ideas at that moment in time. Some other ideas I have thought of are adding different ways that the ball can be hit/thrown, a rule I used to play with when I was a kid was called Cherry Bomb in which the King would spike the ball as hard as he could in order to make it harder to hit. I have also thought that maybe we could change it to catching instead of hitting and see how that went. I also feel that we somewhat replicated what Sicart talks about in Chapter 1 Page 11 about how play Is carnivalesque, and how we found an equilibrium between the game being fun and creative and it being destructive

We tried taking into account what Sicart says in chapter 1 page 14 about how “Play is disruptive as a consequence of being appropriate” Which had given us the idea to place people on the outside throwing objects into the ring to try and distract and mess the players up. A good example I had thought of that was disruptive but appropriate was Red Rover as your entire goal in the game is to get to the other side and break through the other team's arms and<span class="NormalTextRun SCXW171231816 BCX0" <the="" other="" team="" <="" span="">has to try and prevent them from breaking through to get them to join their side, another example I can think of is some clips from old baseball games. The Runner makes it safely to base and after the play is over the defenders mess with them and try to take their hands off the bag or act like they have the ball and are running to tag them as a joke. In Chapter 1 Pg 10 Sicart asks about how can we manage to explore and express ourselves without spiraling into our own destruction, We thought about this idea when we were talking about how many people should be on the outside and how many balls should be in the arena.</span>
